The "Gunks" as they are known in climbing circles, draw visitors from all over. I've crossed over them my entire life, visiting family in Orange and Ulster counties. I look at my little town of Kerhonkson, that sits in the middle of NoWhere, and yet is an hour to EveryWhere ... Woodstock, Rhinebeck, Hunter, Poughkeepsie, Newburgh, Middletown, Port Jervis, Monticello. Just pick a direction!
This area is often referred to as "God's Country" for the sheer beauty of it. The main roads offer breath taking vistas and sweeping turns, as anyone who has ridden over Minnewaska can attest to. That's just the beginning!
The hang-gliders jump off Route 52 near Cragsmoor. Stephen King is said to write in the haunted rooms at Mohonk Mountain House. The eagles fly over the many resevoirs in the area. The roads themselves are anything but boring!
I often think as I ride, like today along Glasco Turnpike, that the only thing such venues as the Dragon's Tail have that we don't, is good PR! Ohayo Mountain Road is NOT for the faint of heart or inexperienced rider!
I've been known to go out all day, barely touch the same spot twice, and never be more than 10 -15 miles from home. There's always another somewhere, that's just as awe inspiring as anywhere I've ever been! It is the purpose of this website to share some of that with you, as seen by the ladies of Women in the Wind: Freebirds Chapter.
